Painting the White Lion predominantly with the palette knife, represented current affairs for me. The white coldness of the Russian landscape and those mesmerising turquoise eyes-not quite the blue of Ukraine, but they called me to paint them at a time when all eyes are on Russia. White Lions are designated as vulnerable
